Traditional liposuction is an easy way to get rid of unwanted fat that may be difficult to get rid of even with exercise. Lipo usually requires that the patient goes under general anesthesia and the procedure can last anywhere from one to four hours depending on the amount of fat that is being removed. Small incisions are made and a long hollow tube is inserted where the fat is being removed. The fat cells are broken up and suctioned out.
Liposuction became smarter in 2007. It was then that SmartLipo, an FDA-approved laser, emerged to improve the liposuction process. This laser melts the fat under the skin but can only reduce a minimal amount of body fat. It requires local anesthesia. This is ideal for those with any sort of heart condition because the use of anesthesia is minimal. There is little to no bleeding when this is done because the laser seals the blood vessels.
