What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Characterized as overdevelopment of fat, skin or tissue in the male breasts, gynecomastia is a common condition that affects up to 3 million men per year. Gynecomastia can be caused by a number of factors, such as hormone imbalance, medications, obesity or another underlying cause, and it can affect either one or both breasts. While this condition is rarely serious, it can cause men to avoid situations where their chests are exposed.

During gynecomastia surgery, excess breast skin, glandular tissue and fat are removed using a variety of techniques. When skin and tissue are removed, traditional excision using a scalpel is often utilized, whereas fat is most commonly removed using liposuction. Gynecomastia surgery can be performed using an endoscope technique, allowing Dr. Jeneby to minimize invasiveness and downtime after surgery.

Prior to surgery, Dr. Jeneby will examine your breasts during your consultation to rule out any medical concerns that may be the source of your gynecomastia. Once the cause has been determined, your treatment options will be discussed.

What is Liposuction?

While gynecomastia surgery restores a masculine shape to the chest, liposuction can remove fat from and improve other areas of the body using a thin, hollow cannula tube and suction. Common places where liposuction is used are the abdomen, back, thighs, arms, and buttocks.

At the Plastic and Cosmetic Center of South Texas, we offer a few different liposuction techniques. With feathering liposuction, excess fat is removed from multiple areas instead of just one. We also offer SmartLipo™, an innovative method that uses laser technology along with liposuction to melt fat and extract it while causing less trauma and bleeding within the body. SmartLipo™ increases precision, minimizing post-surgery discomfort and downtime.

Once the fat is permanently removed, the skin will adjust to the new contours, creating features that appear more sculpted. During your consultation with Dr. Jeneby, your cosmetic goals and options will be discussed, and a treatment plan that is specific to your body will be created.
