There are different types of breast procedures that can be done to both women and men. The two most common procedures in women are breast enlargement (augmentation mammoplasty) and breast lift.
During surgery of breast enlargement, an implant of a soft silicone of silicone gel or saline is placed under the tissue of the breast or under the chest muscle beneath the breast. After the implant has been correctly adjusted to the right shape and position, the incision is closed with stitches.
A breast lift (mastopexy) can raise what may appear as “sagging or drooping” breasts and elevate the nipple and areola. Excess skin can be taken from the bottom of the breast and the area around the areola, to lift the breast. The remaining skin is brought together to tighten and raise the breast. Unlike a breast enlargement, a breast lift requires larger incisions that may extend from the areola down to the creases of where the breast meets the chest.
Both breast enlargements and lifts are usually done in a hospital or surgery center. The surgery can take 1 to 2 hours and is not necessary for an overnight stay. For more information, ask your doctor that specializes in cosmetic breast surgery.
