Botox is most known for the cosmetic procedure to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, however; it is also used to treat the after effects of Bell’s palsy and other serious facial nerve problems. Bell’s palsy may have results of damage facial nerves that controls muscles on one side of the face. Botox can be used to treat these unwanted facial nerve disorders and facial movements known as synkinesis.
Botox can help improve the symmetry of the face and reduce muscle contractures and spasms. Botox injections work through weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or temporarily blocking the nerve input into the muscles. Although, Botox may help with these facial nerves, it is not a cure. Botox is still considered a drug that wears off within a few months depending on how serious the muscles are. Even though Botox can never make the facial nerves permanent from their effects, Botox is to be the most effective tool in making a huge difference in patients’ lives.
