The main benefit of going to a board-certified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Jeneby is the knowledge that you are getting care from somebody with a lot of training and experience. To become board-certified, a plastic surgeon must undertake further training beyond medical school.
When a doctor of any type is described as board-certified, it means they have received extra training in a given specialty and have received certification from the relevant board. In the case of a plastic surgeon, they need to get their certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
How Does a Doctor Get Board-Certified?
Graduating from medical school and earning a medical degree is only the first step. The aspiring plastic surgeon must then secure a residency that will last at least six years. During that time, they will learn enough general surgical procedures to qualify them for a certification from the American Board of Surgery. The candidate will then start learning more specialized surgical techniques that only a plastic surgeon would know or use. They then have to pass oral and written exams administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
Since 1995, the certificates are valid for only ten years. Technology and techniques can change dramatically during a decade, and requiring surgeons to get re-certified ensures that they stay abreast of the newest developments in plastic surgery.
How Can You Tell if a Surgeon is Board-Certified?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons maintains a website with a “Find a Plastic Surgeon” function. The Society only lists surgeons who have received certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgeons or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Pressing the “Find a Plastic Surgeon” button will take you to a page listing places where board-certified plastic surgeons practice. You will eventually get a list of qualified plastic surgeons in the desired area.
